Directions

Deetjens Big Sur Inn is located on the Big Sur Coast, between San Luis Obisbo and Monterey - off of Highway 1 and just 30 miles south of Carmel, California. The sign in front of Deetjens reads BIG SUR INN.

Deetjens is located 300 miles north of Los Angeles and 150 miles south of San Francisco. The nearest airport is Monterey (about 1 hour driving distance). 

The DIRECT ROUTE guides visitors through and out of urban San Francisco to freeways, then across artichoke farmland to the majestic beauty of Highway 1. Approximately 3 1/2 hours.

FROM SAN FRANCISCO: THE DIRECT ROUTE

1.Ask for directions from your Hotel to 101 South or 280 South, whichever is closer. 

From Highway 101 South:

1. Take Highway 101 South about 75 miles. 
2. Follow signs to 156 West (Monterey Peninsula Exit).
3. Follow 156 West about 5 mi to Highway 1 South
4. Follow Highway 1 South to Monterey/Carmel
5. Deetjens Big Sur Inn is located 30 mi south of Carmel on the left (east) side of Highway 1. The sign reads Big Sur Inn.

From Highway 280 South: 

1. Follow Highway 280 South (also 19th Ave) towards San Jose.
2. 280 South merges with Highway 101 South in San Jose.
3. Follow signs to Highway 156 West (Monterey Peninsula Exit)
4. Follow Highway 156 West about 5 mi to Highway 1 South
5. Follow Highway 1 South to Monterey/Carmel
6. Deetjens Big Sur Inn is located 30 mi south of Carmel on the left (east) side of Highway 1. The sign reads Big Sur Inn.

FROM SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT: THE DIRECT ROUTE

1. When exiting the airport follow signs to Highway 101 South.
2. Follow steps 1-5 from the San Francisco: Direct Route (From Highway 101 South).

FROM SAN FRANCISCO: THE SCENIC ROUTE

1. Follow Signs to Highway 280 South (also 19th Ave.).
2. Follow Highway 280 South to Highway 1 South (in the town of Pacifica).
3. From Pacifica to Monterey is roughly 100mi.
4. Deetjens Big Sur Inn is located 30 mi south of Monterey on the left (east) side of Highway 1. The sign reads Big Sur Inn.

FROM SAN JOSE AIRPORT

1. Follow the Airport Terminal signs to exit on AIRPORT PARKWAY.
2. After passing through an Industrial Business area, make a RIGHT on OLD BAYSHORE.
3. Follow signs for Highway 101 SOUTH towards LOS ANGELES.
4. Enter ramp Highway 101 SOUTH. 
5. Follow steps 2-5 from San Francisco: Direct Route (From Highway101 South).

FROM MONTEREY PENINSULA AIRPORT

1. Exit airport--turn right on Highway 68
2. Follow Hwy. 68 to Highway 1 south
3. Follow Highway 1 south through Monterey and Carmel
4. Continue south about 30 miles to Big Sur
5. The Inn is on the left (east) side if Highway 1. The sign reads Big Sur Inn.

FROM LOS ANGELES

1. Go about 200 miles north on Highway 101 North to San Luis Obispo
2. Follow signs to Highway 1 North.
3. Drive about 100 north to Big Sur.
4. Deetjens located on the right (east) side of Highway 1. The sign reads Big Sur Inn.
